Väcka, Poblenou

(This is a review of their former Gracia restaurant, they relocated to Poblenou in 2020) Väcka is a charming vegan restaurant on Carrer de Sèneca, one of Vila de Gràcia’s most stylish and quiet streets. It is a small place with a smooth, minimalist decoration that complements the calm atmosphere and interesting culinary proposals.

We went on a Sunday afternoon with our Mexican friend Pablo to enjoy some late brunch on a rainy day.

Our opinions
Eeva – “I enjoyed our experience in Väcka. I liked my burger, because it was juicy, big and it had a lot of flavour. I was a bit surprised about the size of the portions because they were really big! I was happy to have the spicy sauce on the side because it gave a nice extra touch to the burger and sweet potatoes and it actually was hot. I would have wanted to try one the desserts but since the portions were really big, there was no room for that anymore. If you want to eat something healthy and filling Väcka is a good place for you.”

Rafa – “The burger I chose was very tasty and filling. I really liked the cashew cheddar cheese and the bread was delicious and firm, it never fell apart at any moment, something that in my opinion is really important when it comes to burgers. I also liked the ‘bravoniatos’ that came with my burger, they were made from sweet potato and covered with this mustard-like sauce that enhanced the flavours of this healthy ‘patatas bravas’ recipe. Service was friendly as well.

Pablo – “I usually don’t go to vegan restaurants, but Väcka made a good case on why I should try more often. Having brunch there was a pleasant experience, even though it was a rainy cold day in Barcelona, and I still had to keep my jacket on because it wasn’t warm enough inside. The service was attentive and the presentation of the dishes was appealing. The main highlight for me was the guacamole that was served with the nachos and the Mexican burger, which was fresh and tasty. The burger overall was quite decent for being a vegan one, as it had a nice mushroom pate and soft bread, nevertheless it was a bit too dry for me. As for drinks, they made a good job at not making the smoothie too sweet, but it was on the verge of being too insipid. However, I was mainly disappointed with the coffee, which was bland and barely made it hot to the table. I’ll be returning to try out some of their other dishes whenever I feel like eating healthy, but most likely when taking a vegan girl for a date.
